Calculating the correct mulch quantity prevents over-ordering (wasting money) or under-ordering (requiring additional delivery fees). Proper mulch depth and coverage ensure optimal plant health and weed suppression while maintaining cost efficiency.

Recommended Mulch Depth

Flower beds: 2-3 inches depth. Vegetable gardens: 3-4 inches. Trees and shrubs: 3-4 inches (keep away from trunk). Pathways: 4-6 inches for weed suppression. Slopes: 3-4 inches to prevent erosion. Deeper mulch suppresses weeds better but can suffocate plants if too deep.

Mulch Types and Coverage

Bark mulch: 2 cubic feet per bag covers 12 sq ft at 2 inches deep. Wood chips: Similar coverage, longer lasting. Rubber mulch: Lasts 10+ years, 1.5 cu ft bags. Straw: Sold by bale, covers 50-100 sq ft at 3 inches. Compost: 2-3 inches depth, enriches soil. Different mulch types have different coverage rates and costs.

Calculating Mulch Volume

Formula: Cubic yards = (Length × Width × Depth) / 27. Convert depth to feet (2 inches = 0.167 feet). Example: 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep = (20 × 10 × 0.25) / 27 = 1.85 cubic yards. Round up to 2 cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep.
